Chibi’s Doodling Canvas

Little Sparrow

thegoldensparrow.jpg

Another chibi work. I’ve always been particularly fond of drawing chibi characters. Here is another picture of Liu Yi Fei, who plays the role of The Golden Sparrow from the recent movie [The Forbidden Kingdom]

Originally I was going to turn this image into vectors using Illustrator, thus  we have simple lines without too much detail. However, I wasn’t sure I still wanted to and got pretty tired towards the end of it and decided to paint it instead. Someone told me her eyes looked scary… but I personally think nothing is wrong with it- that’s my style, so I’m leaving it as is. I think it looks a lot like LYF so I’m happy with the outcome.

Aim high in the sky

clouds_wip2.jpg

14.04.08 Made the foreground clouds softer, not sure if it’s any better. The original intent was to have clouds with a more solid shape.

clouds_wip11.jpg

I’ve never been good with clouds…

Well, what can I say- it’s another one of my attempts at a background which isn’t turning out too right. It’s obvious from the image above I need a lot more practice! The big chunk in the foreground doesn’t really look like a cloud, where’s the shape?

I think I know where the problem lies- I need to work out exactly where the clouds are in relation to another, which is in front? which is at the back? That will determine the lighting and shadow casted upon it. Right now they all seemed a bit joined and it’s unclear what’s happening. Oh well, I tried. I might continue this another time, or just leave it unfinished like my other background (green field).

Eternal Tribute

Reworked on 9/4/08

I spent a few hours each night, during the bit of time I had after work over the past 3 nights - adding to 12 hours total. The last piece I did of Sailor Moon was mid 2006 (Battle with Pharoah90), and I was suddenly inspired by it to work on a new one- Eternal Sailor Moon.

Before you start thinking “her legs are too long!”- just wanted to let you know it was intentional, the long legs are part of what makes Sailor Moon- Sailor Moon =)
As for the colouring, at first I was going to ‘paint’ it, but I realized the painted look didn’t quite suit it as much- so I used a bit of it, but cell-shade dominated in the end.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the outcome- maybe I should make a poster with it.

9 April 2008

I got some comments from 2 people saying her legs needed to be ‘thinned’, so today I edited it a bit. I’ve replaced the previous final image in the wip- to the new one. Changes may be subtle, but it can enhance the overall image. It’s possibly the last change to it, so I hope it’s better now. =)

Taichi lovebirds

taichi.jpg

yay, we have a new doodle. This artwork was drawn as a gift for someone and features the couple from “The Master of Tai Chi”. I always found some difficulty drawing cartoons of real life people, but it’s always satisfying when there’s a striking resemblance in the end =) I went for the sketchy, water-colour-painted look. It took about 3-4 hours to get together, but it was fun.

The will to do it

blue.jpg

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I apologise for the lack of doodles for the past 2 months or so. Since my last entry, not long after I started the “Study Anatomy Daily Challenge”- I started working (graphic design) 4 days a week, 9 to 5. I get home each day about 6.30-7pm, have dinner, sit down and it’ll be almost be 8pm. Tired from the day’s work, I just want to relax. I have to hop back in bed by 11pm to give myself 8 hrs of good sleep to prepare for the next work day. Some nights are spent out for dinners, outtings, birthdays- there’s just a general lack of time to be inspired and motivated to draw something decent. This is a shame though, since I know I want to get better at it, yet I’m just not making the time to do it.

Last night I attempted to make a doodle, and I must say my skills have really deteriorated. I’m so rusty! Fear not though… I do intend to get myself up to scratch sometime in the near future =)

Until then, I guess I’ll have to find the will inside me to do it. Thanks for reading, I hope to post something up soon.

Recycling and Practice

herosketch1.jpg
28/12/07 Anatomy Study. He’s a character I created in mid 2006 for a drawing challenge “Hero”. I reused his design and tried to draw him better. Nothing fancy at this stage- just wanted to give it some practice.

OLD drawing found here.

Self Challenge. The Male Anatomy

Reference: Anatomy for the Artist by Sarah Simblet
I want to challenge myself. I realised I want to get better in drawing and the only way is through study and practice. Starting from today, I want to make sure I spend some time daily studying different aspects of the body, the bone structure and the muscles. I want to apply all the things I learn into new pieces of work =) This will be a long journey for me, but hopefully it’ll be exciting and rewarding. What do I want to get out of this? Personal satisfaction! Will I still do painting/random doodles/fanart? Of course :) This is just extra homework I’ve given myself on top of the usual things you’ll find on the blog.

A quick L doodle

Here’s something I hastily whacked together for no real particular reason (so don’t steal XD). I haven’t done anime fanart in quite a while…but here’s L from the manga Death Note.

l.jpg

Earlier today I was browsing through a friend’s site and saw that she did some Death Note fanart lately. I got curious and wondered if it was hard to do so I tried it out myself.. hmm.. I think it turned out quite decent for something so quick- but as you can see I got really lazy with the detail and colour ^_^; I almost feel ashamed doing a ‘fanart’ with so little effort x.x Oh wells, I treat it as more practice with the wacom tablet =)

Yi Fei continue…

_lyf_face03.jpg

I’ve worked more on the face taking feedback into consideration. Thanks to all those who took the time to comment =) It really does help me.
Well.. here we have (hopefully) an improvement. I’ve fixed up the nose, changed her right eye and worked a bit more on the skin. The face is a funny thing.. changing anything slightly can change the overall appearance of a person. Hopefully Yifei looks a bit more skinny now. Not sure if the right eye is still okay but it’s getting there.

(They look like different people every time I change anything XD)

I added more detail to her hair, ears and necklace. I like playing with the strands of hair that just comes out at the ends..hehe.. A natural kind of messiness.
